Certification Watch Volume 12 #2

Certification news regarding new Apple and Java NetBeans certifications and changes to both Cisco's CCIE Routing & Switching lab exam and written exams.

Apple Adds Media Administrator Certification

Apple recently added a new certification to its Xsan certification group. The new Apple Certified Media Administrator (ACMA) designation is more demanding than the Xsan Administrator certification. It requires passing three required exams and one elective. The required exams include Mac OS X Server Essentials, Xsan2 administration, and a Final Cut Server exam. Electives include a Final Cut Pro exam, or OS X exams for administration or deployment, among others. Apple exams typically cost $150 each.

NetBeans Certification Goes Live

Sun Certified Specialist Netbeans IDE (SCSNI) has now progressed from beta version to live version and is available in Prometric testing centers. The SCSNI is for application developers who work with Java desktop and Java web applications using the NetBeans IDE. Topics covered include IDE configuration, project set up, Java SE development, Java EE Web development, editing, testing, profiling and debugging. The exam includes 61 questions and the passing score is 59%.

New Question Type on CCIE R&S Lab Exam

Cisco Systems has announced that effective February 2, 2009, in addition to the live configuration scenarios, candidates taking the CCIE Routing & Switching lab exam will also have to answer 4 or 5 open ended questions on the computer screen, drawn from a pool of possibilities related to the current lab blueprint. The exam time has not been extended, and Cisco says that well prepared candidates will be able to quickly and easily answer the questions.

CCIE Written Exam Procedure and Scoring to Change

In other Cisco news, starting February 19th, CCIE written exam test takers will no longer be able to skip a question and come back to it later. Once you skip a question, you can only move forward. The CCIE written exam scoring is changing as well, being modified so that it matches the scoring format of the Cisco Career exams, using a scale of 300-1000. According to Cisco, you are automatically awarded 300 points for beginning the test and can score up to 1000 points if you answer every question correctly on the exam.
